The oldest masonry in Wedgwood is north of NE 90th Street. The Morningside Heights plat, running up to NE 95th and west of 35th Avenue NE, took its Craftsman-style homes during the two decades before 1940, on narrow lots, about 28 feet of frontage, with the houses set 40 feet or more back from the street. Before 1940 the wider area was semi-rural: historian Valarie Bunn describes large yards with wells, detached garages and outbuildings.
Three building periods carry almost equal weight in the Census count for ZIP area 98115: one home in five predates 1940, and the 1940s and the 1950s each add about 14 percent. For masonry that means mortars of different recipes on neighboring streets. We test hardness with a pick before choosing a mix, because a hard modern mortar packed against soft old brick pushes the damage into the brick.
