A dryer sheds more lint than its screen can stop. The remainder enters the exhaust duct and settles at every bend. For the years 2008 to 2010, the U.S. Fire Administration's estimate was 2,900 residential dryer fires annually, costing about five lives and injuring some 100 people each year. A duct is cleaned with rotary brushes and airflow, working the whole run, and the hood outside is cleared so its flap can open fully.
Recent construction changes the duct, not the risk. In ZIP area 98107, the Ballard core, the American Community Survey dates 28.3% of housing units to the 2010s, and in 98103 the figure is 13.8%. The survey does not describe those buildings. In our experience a laundry placed away from an outside wall means a longer duct with more turns, and length and turns are what slow the air and hold the lint. We measure the run before quoting.
The same federal report identifies the leading factor in residential dryer fires: failure to clean, at 34 percent. Dust, fiber and lint were the first material to ignite in 28 percent of them, and incidence peaks in January, when heavy winter laundry meets a duct nobody has looked at since the previous year.
A clogged duct fails in two ways. Heat that cannot leave builds up around lint, which ignites easily. And on a gas dryer the same duct carries combustion exhaust, so a blockage can hold carbon monoxide in the laundry area. A dryer that needs two cycles is an early warning of both. If the duct is crushed behind the machine, or made of thin foil or plastic, we point it out, because those are the sections where lint lodges first.
