Outside those exemptions SDCI requires permits, and its guide names mechanical, gas, furnace and fireplace work among projects that need one. Mechanical permits are applied for through the Seattle Services Portal; a standard review takes about 9 weeks, while simple projects can receive a subject-to-field-inspection permit within 24 hours. Fees are based on construction value plus hourly review. Gas lines are not covered by the mechanical permit. SDCI's pages do not publish a chimney-specific Tip sheet stating whether a liner, insert or partial rebuild needs a permit, so the scope should be confirmed with SDCI before work.
